Sudden life changing events: Tumor of the Spine/Back bone

Sometimes life can be tough and pose challenges. But these challenges need to be overcome to move ahead in life.

A young male in his third decade of life was enjoying life at its fullest. He had married just a month back. The ceremonies had just finished.

Suddenly his entire life came to halt. He developed sudden severe pain in his middle back bone and it was difficult for him to walk and even turn in bed.

He immediately consulted Dr Amit Kapoor, and after investigations was diagnosed with a benign tumor of one of the bones of the back that had completely damaged that bone and was compressing the nerves.

This was in this D5 bone which is located in the upper third part of the back bone. This is a very sensitive area of the body from where all the major nerves pass. These nerves control the strength and movement on the legs. These are the ones that also control the individuals urine, stool and sexual functions.

The damage to these nerves can cause complete paralysis of the lower half of the body with no control over the passing of urine and stools.

This was a very unfortunate time in his life. Not only for him but for many others in the family. His as well as the girl’s family and the whole life was at stake.

The only thing that was good for him was that he had not yet developed complete weakness in the legs. If one develops complete paralysis of the legs, then recovery becomes very difficult

He underwent a major surgery lasting more than 7 hours. The surgery was performed by Dr A K. In the surgery the whole of the damaged vertebral bone was removed and replaced with new bone supported with screws and cage. With the God’s grace, he had a smooth recovery and started walking normally. We are hope full and wish that he leads his life happily.

Update: Now four years have passed and as per the last reports there is no recurrence and he is back to normal. He has migrated to US for work. We wish him all the best in life.
